On the nature of bears

My mother always told me to confront bullies, and talk to them. She assured me that they were insecure, and more afraid of me than I of them. I protested that bullies were not the same as bears, and I remember coming home once in tears, with a bloody nose, explaining to my mom that I had tried talking to them about it, but they didn’t want to talk. Bullies are bears, I realized, and bears do not have empathy.

  1. It’s weird how I grew up in the same house at the same time and I never knew you were ever bullied or beat up. Not that your little sister sticking up for you would have helped the situation…but I would have talked that bear straight into hibernation!
